K-Pop Idols Who Got Caught Selling Fan Gifts

tvreport Views

Controversy is brewing over the attempt of MIRAE member Jang Yu Bin to sell a fan’s gift on a secondhand market. The incident has drawn attention to similar past controversies involving Kang Sung Hoon, a former member of SECHSKIES, and JIAN of SKYE.

Recently, idol group member Jang Yu Bin of MIRAE has been criticized for attempting to sell a fan’s gift on a secondhand market.

On the 29th, a post titled “Idol selling a fan’s gift on a secondhand market” was posted on social media. The post included the idol’s profile on the secondhand market site and a conversation with him. The idol in question turned out to be Jang Yu Bin of MIRAE.

The fan requested a conversation via the secondhand market site’s chat feature saying, “I want to understand and move on if I can.” Jang Yu Bin replied, “When I had a lot of thoughts and worries, I alleviated them by buying things I wanted. I couldn’t bring myself to ask my parents for money. I think I acted without thinking. I’m sorry.” Despite Jang Yu Bin’s apology, the fan made the conversation public.

The revelation has sparked heated debate.

Those defending Jang Yu Bin’s actions argued, “Once the gift was given to Jang Yu Bin, he became the owner. Whether to sell the item is up to Jang Yu Bin,” and “It’s too much to make the conversation public even after he apologized. It seems too harsh towards an idol they like.”

However, those criticizing Jang Yu Bin pointed out, “The fan gave the gift to see Jang Yu Bin use it,” and “It’s a clear deception to the fans.”

While the debate continues, Jang Yu Bin’s agency DSP Media has yet to release any official statement.

In 2019, claims surfaced online that former SECHSKIES member singer Kang Sung Hoon sold a fan’s gift on a secondhand market.

Suspicion arose when luxury brand Louis Vuitton’s dog collar and bracelet and Alexander McQueen’s shoes, known to have been gifts from a fan to Kang Sung Hoon appeared on a secondhand market site.

The controversy was confirmed as true when it was discovered that the phone number registered on the secondhand market site was the same as that of Kang Sung Hoon’s known girlfriend, and the Louis Vuitton dog collar was the only one in Korea.

As the controversy grew, Kang Sung Hoon apologized on his social media, stating, “I am deeply sorry to the fan. I severed all ties with the fan club manager and stylist a few months ago. I had no idea what items she was keeping. I was shocked to find out through this article that the gifts from fans were mixed in with the items she was getting rid of.”

Appearing on MBC’s “Section TV Entertainment News” afterward, Kang Sung Hoon again apologized, saying, “I was taken aback when I found out belatedly. I was also angry.”

JIAN of SKYE, who debuted through the boy group debut project “Boys24,” also faced controversy over selling a fan’s gift on a secondhand market.

In 2017, claims were made that JIAN sold sneakers and earrings he received as gifts from fans on a secondhand market site. The controversy was fueled by the discovery that the secondhand market site ID was similar to the ID JIAN usually used.

Following the controversy, JIAN apologized in a post on the official fan cafe, stating, “I deeply apologize for causing criticism.” JIAN stated, “I want to tell the truth about the current controversy and ask for forgiveness. The shoes were the same model as the ones I already had, so I sold the ones I had. The shoes given by the fan were worn a few days ago and are still being kept with care.” He denied the claim about the shoes being sold secondhand.

JIAN continued, “The earrings were indeed a gift from a fan. I was thoughtless. I am sincerely reflecting and regretting. If given the chance, I would like to meet the person who gave the gift in person and apologize sincerely.”
