SNL Korea Parodies President Yoon Protest Incident

inews24 Views

A scene depicting a silencing by covering the mouth appeared in the first broadcast of the 5th season of Coupang Play’s comedy show, SNL Korea. This was a satirical depiction of an incident where a graduate was forcibly carried out for protesting against President Yoon Suk Yeol during a graduation ceremony at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon last month.

In the first episode of SNL Korea Season 5, released on the 2nd, Kim Min Kyo, disguised as President Yoon Suk Yeol, mentioned the March 1st Independence Movement speech.

Kim Min Kyo said, “105 years ago, our ancestors launched the March 1st Movement with a belief in freedom, and ultimately, there should be no actions that harm that liberal spirit. If I may add, satire is a right of SNL, so I would like to say that we will continue to do so freely.”

This seems to be a re-quotation of President Yoon’s past remarks. President Yoon appeared on SNL Korea in October 2021, before his presidential election.

At that time, when asked by Joo Hyun Young in the Reporter Joo’s Go segment, “Will you help SNL to freely satirize politics?” President Yoon replied, “There’s no need for help. It’s the right of SNL.”

The broadcast also featured a parody of the mouth-covering incident. The performers recreated the scene where President Yoon sang “We Need Our Love” by singer Byun Jin Sub with the Presidential Office Choir during the last Lunar New Year holiday.

When Kwon Hyuk Soo suddenly hit a high note in the middle of singing, two performers dressed as bodyguards covered Kwon’s mouth and dragged him out. As he was being dragged away, Kwon Hyuk Soo shouted, “Let me go, let me go, let me ad-lib.”

After the program was released, opinions arose online that it parodied the incident where Shin Min Ki, a spokesman for the Daejeon City Party of the Green Justice Party, who attended the KAIST graduation ceremony as a graduate, was dragged away by bodyguards for shouting “Don’t make a fuss, restore the R&D (research and development) budget!”

Meanwhile, Lee Jun Seok, the leader of the New Reform Party, appeared in the Reporter Ji’s Go segment of SNL Korea that day. He left a video message for Han Dong Hoon, the non-standing committee chairman of the People Power Party, saying, “You must be happy these days. But there were many people in that position, including me. You will feel the weight of the crown.”

When asked to name a common idiom that comes to mind when looking at Ahn Cheol Soo, Kim Ki Hyun, Lee Jun Seok, and Han Dong Soon, Lee replied, “Killing the dog after hunting.” To the question, “Do you think he (Han Dong Hoon) will survive until the end?” he replied, “He will be discarded if the results are bad.”
