U.S. President Joe Biden mentioned a “great comeback” and indirectly criticized his election competitor, former President Donald Trump, in his State of the Union Address on the 7th (local time). He also emphasized the need for new policies, including the safeguarding of abortion rights.

According to Bloomberg News on the 7th (local time), President Biden delivered a policy speech at a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives tonight. With the November election approaching, there is interest in his ability to effectively convey his message, which will essentially serve as a pledge, while presenting policy tasks for his term that will appeal to voters.

Based on excerpts of the speech released by the White House earlier, he remarked, “I came to office determined to get us through one of the toughest periods in our nation’s history,” and “in thousands of cities and towns the American people are writing the greatest “comeback story” never told,” expressing his feelings. The mention of a “great comeback” aligns with his message right after taking office that “America is back.”

Furthermore, he indirectly criticized former President Trump, with whom he is set for a rematch in the November election.

He said, “My lifetime has taught me to embrace freedom and democracy,” and “It’s a future based on core values that have defined America, such as honesty, decency, dignity, and equality.” He then pointed out the need to eliminate hatred and ensure that everyone is respected and has equal opportunities, emphasizing, “Some other people my age see an American story of resentment, revenge, and retribution, but that’s not me.”

Above all, it is noteworthy what direction he will suggest regarding abortion rights. He said, “If Americans send me a Congress that supports the right to choose, I promise you: I will restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land again.”

“Roe v. Wade” was a landmark ruling recognizing a woman’s right to abort up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, but it was overturned in June 2022 by the Supreme Court, which was reorganized to be conservative during the Trump administration.

President Biden also appealed for the need for new responses, including support for Ukraine, response to immigrant issues, tax increases for the wealthy, and reduction of prescription drug prices, while outlining his achievements in his first term.
