US Congressman Reprimanded for Call to Bomb Gaza Like Nagasaki and Hiroshima

As the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip continues due to Israeli aggression, a US Republican Congressman is under fire for suggesting that nuclear bombs should be used in Gaza.

According to CNN on the 31st, Congressman Tim Walberg (Michigan) responded to a question about the US building a port for humanitarian aid in Gaza at a local event on the 25th, stating that “we should not spend a penny on humanitarian aid” and that “it should end quickly like Nagasaki and Hiroshima.” The US ended World War II by dropping atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Japan.

The Congressman’s remarks were shared online in a video and sparked controversy. As public criticism grew, his office provided the full text of his discernment to the US media and issued an explanation. According to his office, after his comments about Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Walberg said, “The same goes for Ukraine. If we want to defeat Russia, 80-100% of the aid to Ukraine should be used to defeat Russia, instead of 80% being used for humanitarian purposes.”

Walberg, who made the remarks, posted on the social networking service X (formerly Twitter) on the same day, stating, “As someone who grew up during the Cold War, I never support the use of nuclear weapons” and “I used a metaphor to convey that Israel and Ukraine should quickly win their respective wars without harming the US military.” He continued, “Exploitation of this metaphor distorted the message I wanted to convey due to the context being cut off, but I stand fully on the belief that they should win the war quickly without harming the US military and on the side of our allies.”
