American Beauty Nightmare: FDA Warns of Fake Botox

Daniel Kim Views

Counterfeit Botox of AbbVie is being distributed across multiple states in the U.S.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned healthcare professionals and consumers on the 16th (local time) that harmful fake AbbVie Botox has been provided to consumers for cosmetic purposes in several states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the FDA are investigating reports of adverse reactions in people who received fake Botox injections.

According to the CDC, as of April 12, a total of 19 people in nine states have reported adverse reactions after receiving Botox injections from unlicensed or untrained individuals or in non-medical environments such as homes and spas.

The states that reported adverse reactions are Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, and Washington.

The FDA’s investigation is ongoing, and they are currently working with Botox manufacturer AbbVie to identify and remove the suspected counterfeit products found in the U.S.

AbbVie has yet to respond to requests for confirmation.
