According to the legal community, on the 19th, the Gwangju District Court’s Criminal Division 11 (Judge Ko Sang Young) sentenced the woman in her 20s, who was indicted on murder charges, to seven years in prison.

She was handed over to the court on charges of killing her six-month-old daughter by throwing her out of a window on the 15th floor of an apartment in Geumho-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju, around 6:20 a.m. on December 3 last year.

At the time, she had a deep-rooted conflict with her husband due to economic problems, including other issues. She committed the crime in rage after her husband left the house and did not return following a marital dispute.

Her defense attorney pleaded for leniency, noting that the defendant committed the crime while in an abnormal mental state, receiving psychiatric treatment.

Her husband also expressed willingness to plead for her compassion in court, acknowledging his partial culpability.

The court stated, “Despite being a mother with a responsibility to protect and raise her child, she brutally killed her six-month-old daughter, warranting a severe punishment.” However, the court also noted, “There were some mitigating factors, such as her suffering from depression and the husband’s accountability in the motive for the crime, which were reflected in the sentencing.”
