Drones Strike Russian Oil: Ukraine’s Bold Move Shuts Down Krasnodar Refinery

Daniel Kim Views

A Ukrainian drone attack on southern Russia has forced a small independent oil refinery in Krasnodar to cease operations.

On the 19th (local time), the Russian administration announced that six drones attacked the Sloviansk facility overnight. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

According to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense, 61 Ukrainian drones and 9 ATACMS targeting the Krasnodar region were shot down overnight.

Additionally, RBC reported, citing the security officer of the refinery operator Slavyansk ECO, that the refinery halted operations for inspection. It remains uncertain when operations will resume.

This refinery, which processes around 4 million tons of crude oil annually (around 80,000 barrels per day), had already been targeted by drone attacks in March and April.

The U.S. criticized that Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries pose a risk to oil prices and urged Kyiv to focus on military objectives instead.

In a Senate committee hearing last week, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said, “Such attacks could have cascading effects on the global energy situation,” and “Ukraine would be better off attacking tactical and operational objectives that can directly impact the ongoing battle.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine has not yet commented on the incident.
