Spanish Police Recover One of Francis Bacon’s Stolen Works

Daniel Kim Views

Spanish police have recovered a painting by British expressionist Francis Bacon that was stolen in 2015.

According to Reuters, the recovered work is Study for Portrait of Jose Capelo, created in 1989, and is estimated to be valued at 5 million euros (approximately $5.9 million).

Of the five works stolen from a residence in Madrid, Spain, in 2015, three were recovered in 2017. The total value of the five works is estimated to exceed 25 million euros (approximately $29.5 million). In February, Spanish police arrested two individuals suspected of receiving the stolen art and found the fourth piece in a building in Madrid during their investigation.

Since 2015, 16 people have been arrested in connection with this case. Spanish police reportedly focus on those linked to Eastern European organizations to find the last missing painting. Born in Ireland in 1909, Bacon is considered a leading figure in 20th-century expressionism and surrealism.
