Republicans Demand Biden’s Resignation After Dropping Out of 2024 Race

inews24 Views

“He should resign from the presidency as well.” Republican lawmakers pressured President Joe Biden to step down following his decision to abandon his reelection campaign.

On the 22nd, Biden withdrew from the upcoming presidential election. Following his announcement, many media outlets reported that Republicans questioned his ability to govern.

CNN stated, “More than 12 Republicans argued that President Biden should resign from the presidency following his withdrawal as a candidate.” The report added, “House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance are vocally reacting to Biden’s decisions.”

Johnson stated, “If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately.”

Vance also posed a question through social media: “If Joe Biden ends his reelection campaign, how can he justify remaining President?”

Republican senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma claimed that Biden should be forcibly removed from office according to the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

This amendment includes provisions regarding presidential incapacity and succession, stating that “Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.”

CNN reported, “The Biden administration is unlikely to act on this provision.” Democrats strongly opposed to the Republican calls for Biden’s resignation.

Senator Chris Coons, a close ally of Biden, dismissed the claims as “nonsense.” White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates emphasized, “President Biden expects to complete his term and deliver more historic achievements for the American people.”

Biden’s term is until January 20 of next year. His withdrawal statement confirmed his intention to serve for the rest of his term.
