China’s Silence on Biden’s Exit: What Are They Really Thinking?

China has stated it will not officially comment on President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.

A spokesperson, Mao Ning, is responding to journalists’ questions in a regular briefing by the foreign ministry on the 22nd—/ Chinese Foreign Ministry website

During a regular briefing yesterday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning was asked for their opinion on Biden’s announcement to withdraw from the presidential race. She responded, “No comment.”

She also mentioned that, in the event of additional U.S. sanctions on Chinese banks that facilitate transactions with Russia, China would take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

The U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan recently indicated that China is supporting Russia’s war efforts and suggested the possibility of further sanctions on Chinese banks that enable transactions with Russia.

Mao Ning also emphasized, “China maintains an objective and fair stance regarding the Ukraine crisis,” adding, “China is neither an inducer nor a party to the crisis. However, we worked to resolve political issues by actively encouraging a dialogue.” She pointed out, “The U.S. has shifted responsibility onto China and has attempted to create discord with other countries. Instead of such action, they should take concrete actions to resolve the political crisis.”

Furthermore, she asserted, “Both China and Russia are independent major countries. China and Russia have normal cooperation, which does not target any third party and should not become a target for external interference or coercion. We do not accept external interference or intimidation.” She stated that China firmly opposes illegal unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction and will take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.

Just before the regular briefing, diplomatic sources in Beijing reported that the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced Vice President Han Zheng would attend the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics as a special representative of General Secretary and President Xi Jinping. Mao further explained, “China values the development of the sports industry and has actively participated in international Olympic events. Vice President Han’s attendance at the opening ceremony demonstrates our interest and support for the international Olympic movement and for hosting the Olympics in France.”
