Cold War 2.0? Putin Threatens ‘Mirror Response’ to U.S. Missile Plans

Daniel Kim Views

President Putin warned that if the United States deploys long-range missiles in Germany, Russia will respond with “mirror measures.”

According to reports from Sputnik and Reuters, Putin revealed his intention to respond correspondingly to missile deployments from the U.S. during a Navy Day ceremony in Saint Petersburg.

On the 10th, the U.S. and Germany had a joint agreement to deploy long-range missiles, such as the SM-6 (surface-to-air missile) and Tomahawk (cruise missile). They also announced the development of hypersonic weapons in Germany, which will start in 2026.

Putin pointed out that the range of these missiles falls within important Russian national and military facilities, as well as industrial and defense infrastructure. He noted, “The flight time to targets on our territory of such missiles, which in the future may be equipped with nuclear warheads, will be about 10 minutes.

He added, “We will take mirror measures to deploy, taking into account the actions of the United States, its satellites in Europe and other regions of the world.” stressing that the development of strike systems that could be deployed in response to U.S. missiles in Germany is in its final stages.

He remarked, “This situation is reminiscent of the events of the Cold War related to the deployment of American medium-range Pershing missiles in Europe.” The U.S. faced strong opposition from Russia when it deployed Pershing II missiles capable of striking Moscow in West Germany in 1983.

At the end of last month, Putin stated that he would reconsider the deployment of intermediate and short-range missiles due to the United States’ intentions to supply weapons in Europe and Asia.
