No More Chinese Code in Cars: Biden’s Plan to Overhaul Autonomous Vehicle Regulations

theguru Views

The U.S. government plans to ban using Chinese software in autonomous and connected vehicles, citing national security concerns.

According to Reuters, the Biden administration is set to announce regulations prohibiting using Chinese-made software in autonomous vehicles at Level 3 and above (where the driver is present but intervenes only when necessary). This regulation would also ban road testing of autonomous vehicles made by Chinese companies in the U.S.

The U.S. government reportedly plans to prohibit vehicles equipped with the latest wireless communication modules developed in China.

If these measures are implemented, automakers and parts suppliers must prove that the software used in their autonomous and connected vehicles is not produced by “FEOC·foreign entities of concern,” such as those in China.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the introduction of new regulations on connected vehicles in August. These regulations will include software restrictions targeting China and other adversarial countries.
