On National Liberation Day of Korea, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un exchanged congratulatory messages with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

North Korea’s state-run media, Korean Central News Agency, reported that Putin sent a message to Kim on the 13th, stating, “We pay our respects to the soldiers of the Red Army and the patriots of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea who fought shoulder to shoulder for the liberation of Korea (North Korea).”

According to the report, Putin emphasized, “What is important is that the bonds of friendship and mutual assistance forged during the harsh days of war continue to serve as a reliable foundation for developing friendly relations between our two countries today.”

He added that the thorough implementation of the “Treaty on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” will surely drive the expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation, which will comprehensively cover the interests of the North Korean people and contribute to regional stability and security.

In response, Kim sent a reply yesterday, stating, “The ties and affection between our two armies and people, forged and deepened in our bloody struggle against a common enemy, make traditional North Korea-Russia bilateral friendly relations turn into a comprehensive strategic partnership and elevate into an indestructible comrade relationship and as a powerful driving force for the construction of strong nations and the creation of a multipolar new world.”

He further expressed his firm belief that the Russian people will surely achieve victory in their crusade for regional peace and international justice.

Meanwhile, on Liberation Day, Kim visited the Liberation Tower to pay tribute to the Soviet soldiers who fell during the Korean War. This marked the first time Kim visited the Liberation Tower on this day, which was interpreted as a gesture to showcase the close bilateral relations.
