North Korea’s Trash Balloon Attack: Over 260 Balloons Land in South Korea

Daniel Kim Views

On Thursday, the trash-filled balloons were floating from Kaepung County in North Hwanghae Province, North Korea, from the view of the Odusan Unification Observation Deck in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. Yonhap News

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that from the night of the 5th to the early morning of the 6th, North Korea launched over 260 trash-filled balloons toward South Korea. They confirmed that approximately 140 items had fallen in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas.

The balloons included paper waste and plastic bottles but no harmful substances.

The JCS noted that the number of fallen items may not always correspond to the number of balloons, as they can break into several smaller bags upon bursting in the air.

Since late May, North Korea has sent balloons southward 14 times in response to anti-North Korean leaflets distributed by South Korean civilian groups.
