Japan’s Ministry of Defense announced that North Korea had launched an object believed to be a ballistic missile on Thursday morning.

According to the Japanese ministry, the missile likely fell outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

In the context of North Korea’s missile launch after a two-and-a-half-month hiatus, Japan’s Nikkei reported that Kim Jong Un recently emphasized his stance against U.S. nuclear forces. According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim declared enhanced ballistic missile capabilities in his speech marking the Day of the Foundation of the Republic on September 9.

Earlier, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that North Korea had fired several short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea around 7:10 AM and stated that they are maintaining a heightened alert while closely sharing information with the U.S. and Japan.
