Trump Eyes Peace Deal: Can He Broker Truce Between Putin and Zelenskyy?

Former President Donald Trump said he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to reports from the AP News and others, Trump stated at a press conference held at Trump Tower in New York on Thursday, “As you know, President Zelenskyy has asked to meet with me, and I will be meeting with him tomorrow around 9:45 in Trump Tower.” Despite their differing viewpoints, Trump expressed confidence, “We’ll see what happens, but I believe I can work that out.”

Trump has previously criticized the ongoing conflict, calling the devastation in Ukraine “horrific” but maintaining that Ukraine should have considered ceding territory to halt the war and initiate ceasefire talks. He has also faulted the Biden administration for handing over billions in aid to Ukraine while refusing to push for negotiations with Russia.

Zelenskyy, however, rejected the idea of territorial concessions, calling it “too radical.” U.S. media outlets, citing the tense back-and-forth between the two leaders, suggested that the likelihood of a productive meeting was slim. According to the Associated Press, while Trump’s team had repeatedly declined, Zelenskyy had repeatedly requested the meeting.
