Russia Backs North Korea’s Drone Claims, Warns Seoul on Escalating Tensions

wikitree Views

In a new escalation of tensions, North Korea has accused South Korea of flying a drone into Pyongyang’s airspace and distributing anti-North Korean leaflets. Russia has publicly backed North Korea’s’ claims, describing the situation as a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

According to Yonhap News, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Monday that such actions by Seoul “can only be seen as a serious infringement on North Korea’s sovereignty and an interference in its internal affairs aimed at destroying the legitimate state and political system of an independent country while depriving it of its right to develop autonomously.”

Zakharova pointed out that North Korea reported a South Korean drone had dropped leaflets over its territory, including Pyongyang, and noted that tensions on the Korean Peninsula have recently escalated.

“The South Korean authorities must take North Korea’s warnings very seriously and stop reckless provocations that could exacerbate tensions on the Korean Peninsula and lead to real military incidents,” she urged.

She further stated that Russia would continue to play a “constructive role” in preventing further escalation. She emphasized its commitment to a positive resolution, referencing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty signed between Russia and North Korea.

Earlier, on October 11, North Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a major statement, claiming that South Korea had infiltrated a drone into Pyongyang on October 3, 9, and 10, dropping anti-North Korean leaflets. They also threatened, stating, “We are keeping all offensive capabilities in a ready state and issuing a stern final warning.”
