On Tuesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern about the situation on the Korean Peninsula following North Korea’s destruction of connecting roads between the two Koreas.

In response to a request for comment, the Secretary-General’s office told Voice of America (VOA) that the Secretary-General is closely monitoring developments on the Korean Peninsula. The statement highlighted Guterres’ continued call for de-escalation, urging all parties to exercise restraint and work towards the swift restoration of communication channels between North Korea and other involved nations.

The statement continued by reaffirming the Secretary-General’s call for North Korea to fully comply with its international obligations under all relevant Security Council resolutions. It also emphasized the importance of resuming dialogue without preconditions to achieve sustainable peace and verifiable denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

This follows reports from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) that North Korea had destroyed key connecting roads with explosives around noon on Tuesday, further escalating tensions in the region.
