The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that a high-ranking North Korean general was wounded in a Ukrainian airstrike in Russia’s Kursk region.

This marks the first confirmation by a Western official of a North Korean officer casualty since Pyongyang reportedly deployed approximately 10,000 troops to support Russian operations in Ukraine last month. The exact identity and severity of the officer’s injuries remain classified.

Earlier, Ukrainian authorities revealed that at least 500 North Korean officers, including senior military figures Kim Young Bok, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army, Ri Chang Ho, Director of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, and Major General Shin Geum Chul, had entered Russia to lead the deployed forces.

The injured North Korean general is believed to have been involved in a Ukrainian attack on Wednesday, which involved the launch of British-made Storm Shadow air-to-ground cruise missiles targeting the Russian Kursk region.
