President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to impose additional tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada, citing drug trafficking and illegal immigration as primary reasons.

According to Bloomberg on Monday, Trump declared on his social media account that he would impose an additional 10% tariff on nearly all Chinese imports. This measure aims to counter the influx of synthetic opioid fentanyl entering the U.S. through countries like Mexico.

Trump also pledged to sign an executive order on his first day back in office, January 20, to impose an additional 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. He stated that these measures would remain in place until the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants ceases.

Trump criticized China for not fulfilling its promise to impose the death penalty on fentanyl traffickers, highlighting that drugs are entering the U.S. at unprecedented levels, primarily through Mexico. He asserted that until this issue is addressed, the U.S. will impose an additional 10% tariff on a wide range of Chinese products imported into the U.S., which surpasses any previous tax increase.

Trump addressed the situation at the borders with Mexico and Canada, noting that many individuals are crossing into the U.S., bringing with them crime and drugs at alarming rates. He stated that the tariffs imposed would stay in effect until effective measures are taken to halt the influx of drugs, particularly fentanyl, and all illegal immigrants.
