Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurer in the United States, was fatally shot on Wednesday in the heart of Manhattan, according to the Associated Press.

Law enforcement officials say the assailant targeted Thompson with a handgun as he was approaching the Hilton Midtown Hotel, where UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference was set to take place. After the attack, the suspect fled down an alley and escaped on an electric bike, heading toward Central Park.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has stated that while the attack appears to have been premeditated, the motive remains unclear at this time.

According to police, Thompson was attacked around 6:45 a.m. as he made his way to the Hilton Midtown Hotel, located on 6th Avenue in Manhattan. The shooter approached Thompson from behind and fired several shots. The NYPD confirmed that Thompson was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
