The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) is attempting to execute an arrest warrant against South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has been identified as the alleged leader behind the December 3 insurrection attempt. However, the Presidential Security Service is actively blocking their efforts.
On Friday, at approximately 6:14 AM, CIO prosecutors and investigators left the Gwacheon government complex in five separate vehicles. They arrived at the presidential residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, at 7:18 AM. This marks the first attempt to execute the arrest warrant, which the court issued three days earlier.
Subsequently, the CIO attempted to proceed past the entrance to execute the arrest warrant. However, reports indicate that the Presidential Security Service has mobilized dozens of staff members to form a human barricade, effectively preventing the CIO’s advance. Currently, the CIO and police are engaged in a tense standoff with the Presidential Security Service.
Whether the Presidential Security Service will permit CIO investigators to enter the building where Yoon and the First Lady reside remains uncertain.
The situation in front of the presidential residence has reached a fever pitch as anti-impeachment protesters gather, determined to prevent the president’s arrest.
Approximately 300 meters away at the International Lutheran Church, supporters of the president were continuing their rally. Upon hearing that CIO investigators were negotiating with the Presidential Security Service to enter the residence, they began chanting, “The Security Service must protect the president with their lives!”
Should the CIO successfully arrest Yoon, they will have 48 hours to decide whether to request a detention warrant.
