Justice for Cpl. Chae: Special Counsel Takes a Closer Look at Military Probe

Daniel Kim Views

A Justice Ministry vehicle enters the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, south of the capital, on Tuesday, as special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team made a second attempt to bring in former President Yoon Suk Yeol from his cell for questioning over his failed attempt to impose martial law. (Yonhap)The special counsel team investigating the 2023 death of a young Marine Corps member announced Wednesday its intention to question a former Marine investigator as a witness. The investigator had previously led the inquiry into the tragic incident.

Col. Park Jung-hun is scheduled to appear at the special counsel’s office later today. He will face questions regarding allegations of interference by high-ranking military officials and the presidential office in his initial probe into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun. The young corporal lost his life while participating in search and rescue operations during severe flooding in July 2023.

The team, led by Special Prosecutor Lee Myeong-hyeon, has been investigating former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon is accused of pressuring then-Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup to alter the findings of Park’s investigation.

Following his refusal to yield to pressure from superiors, Park was indicted on charges of insubordination. However, he was subsequently acquitted by a district court earlier this year. In a recent development, Park has been reinstated to his previous position within the Marine Corps. (Yonhap)
