The special counsel team investigating the 2023 death of a young Marine Corps member announced Wednesday its intention to question a former Marine investigator as a witness. The investigator had previously led the inquiry into the tragic incident.
Col. Park Jung-hun is scheduled to appear at the special counsel’s office later today. He will face questions regarding allegations of interference by high-ranking military officials and the presidential office in his initial probe into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun. The young corporal lost his life while participating in search and rescue operations during severe flooding in July 2023.
The team, led by Special Prosecutor Lee Myeong-hyeon, has been investigating former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon is accused of pressuring then-Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup to alter the findings of Park’s investigation.
Following his refusal to yield to pressure from superiors, Park was indicted on charges of insubordination. However, he was subsequently acquitted by a district court earlier this year. In a recent development, Park has been reinstated to his previous position within the Marine Corps. (Yonhap)
