Korea Zinc has invested 150 billion KRW ($108 million) in environmental facilities over the past five years, positioning itself as a leader in sustainable smelting practices.
The company’s recently released sustainability report reveals a record-breaking 55.8 billion KRW ($40 million) spent on eco-friendly upgrades last year, marking a 40.9% increase from the previous year’s 39.6 billion KRW ($28 million). This upward trend in green spending has been consistent, with investments rising from 11.4 billion KRW ($8 million) in 2021 to 12.3 billion KRW ($9 million) in 2022.
Korea Zinc’s environmental strategy focuses on enhancing water and air quality while improving chemical material management. The company has implemented cutting-edge reverse osmosis technology to boost rainwater reuse, advanced dust reduction methods, and constructed new byproduct storage facilities. These initiatives have yielded significant results, with total waste reduced by 13.7% to 657,016 tons in the past year.
As part of the government’s integrated environmental permission system, Korea Zinc has already completed 41 of the 85 required tasks for the 2023-2027 period. The company aims to tackle an additional 15 tasks this year.
