President Lee Calls for a Fresh Look at South Korea’s Constitution!

President Lee Jae Myung said Thursday it is time to discuss an amendment to the nation’s Constitution, urging the National Assembly to take the lead in the potential amendment process.

In a Facebook post marking the 77th anniversary of Constitution Day, Lee emphasized the importance of a people-centered constitutional amendment. He pledged to work alongside the legislature to ensure the public’s will is fully reflected in the revision process.

Lee commended the nation’s democratic resilience in overcoming a failed martial law attempt by former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was ousted from office.

\”Now, we must take another step forward,\” Lee wrote. \”Just as we change clothes with the seasons, it’s time to revise and refine our Constitution to reflect our changing realities.\”

He argued that the revised Constitution should acknowledge the nation’s difficult past, chart a course toward a more just future, and serve as a living document that embodies the aspirations of the people.

To achieve these goals, Lee proposed incorporating several elements into the amended Constitution. These include honoring the spirit of the 1980 pro-democracy movement, bolstering basic rights, expanding local autonomy and decentralization, and implementing reforms to key government institutions.

While Lee had previously campaigned on a proposal to amend the Constitution to allow presidents to serve two four-year terms, this marks his first call for revision since taking office in early June. (Yonhap)
