Rising quartet presents a raw and emotional rock track with an honest message
The four-piece band, which burst onto the scene in September 2024, features An Tae-gyu on vocals, Kwon Se-hyuk on guitar, Pyun Sung-hyun on bass, and Ko Gang-hun on drums. In a nod to their collective spirit, the members choose to credit their work solely under the band’s name, underscoring their shared commitment to the music and a unified vision.
“Radio Silence,” already a crowd favorite at various concerts and festivals, showcases deeply personal lyrics inspired by the band’s struggles with uncertainty and emotional isolation during their training period. The track is marked by its rich layering of thunderous drums, pulsating bass, searing guitar riffs, and haunting choral harmonies.
“This song is like a wayward airship, capturing the disorientation and challenges we faced as trainees – a time when we constantly questioned our place and direction,” vocalist An shared with Variety.
Guitarist Kwon added, “Back then, we only had one computer, so we’d huddle around it to make music. We tried to channel all our anxiety into the sound – creating something that feels as if it’s being slowly sucked into a void.”
While the track reflects on their past, the band members emphasized its ongoing relevance. “The uncertainty we experienced then still resonates in our lives today. Even though we’ve moved beyond the trainee phase, we’re still on a journey of discovery and pursuit,” bassist Pyun revealed.
Interestingly, the song’s Korean title translates to “Earth Boy.” Pyun explained, “Despite living on Earth, we never quite felt like we belonged. This sense of displacement inspired the title, reflecting our yearning to finally feel at home.”
As for the English title “Radio Silence,” Pyun noted its metaphorical significance. “The phrase denotes a complete communication blackout, which we felt perfectly encapsulated the emotional state described in the song.”
Despite being less than a year into their debut, Dragon Pony has already gained significant traction through numerous live performances. “We’ve rocked stages at both domestic and international festivals, even selling out two shows in Taipei. Each experience fuels our passion to create even more compelling music,” An reflected, looking back on their whirlwind first year.
Kwon expressed hope that Dragon Pony could play a part in the current Korean rock renaissance. “There’s been a resurgence of interest in bands lately, and we’d be thrilled to contribute to that movement, even in a small way.”
When asked about the band’s unique selling point, Ko recalled a recent encounter with You Hee-yeol, the head of their label Antenna and a respected figure in the Korean music industry. “He told us, ‘You’re a band that looks cooler today than you did yesterday.’ That really struck a chord with us. I believe our greatest strength lies in our constant evolution as artists.”
