According to officials, the suspect had been experiencing increasing feelings of alienation and isolation, which led to a significant decline in his self-esteem. This emotional distress ultimately drove him to begin planning the attack in August of last year. The suspect, believing himself to be a victim, told authorities, “The other family members set me up.”
The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency reported in a media briefing that the victim and his mother had consistently provided financial support to the suspect, regularly visiting him on holidays and birthdays.
The tragic incident occurred on July 20, coinciding with the suspect’s birthday, at the victim’s residence in Songdo, Incheon.
The victim’s mother had divorced the suspect in 1998 following his conviction for a sex crime but continued to live with him until their son’s marriage in 2015. Authorities found no evidence of prior conflict among the involved parties, noting that the victim’s family had maintained consistent financial support for the suspect.
Investigators uncovered substantial financial transactions made to the suspect’s bank accounts from the victim’s family.
The suspect now faces charges for the murder of his son and illegal possession of a homemade firearm. Additionally, he is charged with the attempted murder of the victim’s wife, his two children, and an acquaintance of the victim’s wife who was present at the birthday gathering.
Law enforcement officials are currently deliberating whether to add charges related to the use of explosives. Police investigations revealed that the suspect had rigged explosives in his own home, set to detonate at noon on July 21.
The suspect’s case was formally transferred to the prosecution on Wednesday.
