Feeling Bloated Post-Holiday? 5 Detox Secrets to Feel Light Again

Body stretched out after a long holiday/break
How to remove waste/toxins accumulated in the body

After a long holiday, many people feel heavy due to the consumption of high-calorie foods and frequent drinking. What they need is a detox. Here, we introduce ways to detoxify the body without starving or excessive exercise.

□ Drink Plenty of Water

Water plays a significant role in activating bodily functions. It helps regulate body temperature, absorb nutrients, and remove waste built up in the body.

Drinking plenty of water is effective in excreting waste through sweat and urine. If the body lacks water and shows symptoms of dehydration, physical strength tends to decrease.

The amount of water intake required varies from person to person, depending on their weight and health status. However, supplying enough water, such as drinking more than 2L (approximately 0.53 gallons) daily, can help remove toxins from the body.

□ Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables

If you’ve eaten a lot of greasy pancakes or meat during the holiday, consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables can also be effective for detoxification.

Fruits and vegetables contain many nutrients the body needs, such as vitamins and minerals. In particular, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, kiwi, and other fiber-rich foods help remove toxins.

Soluble fiber acts as a prebiotic, a food source for probiotics in the gut. Insoluble fiber supports the digestive tract, facilitating bowel movements and waste excretion.

Vitamins can also help activate bodily functions. If you’ve gained weight suddenly due to high-calorie foods, you can control your weight with a vegetable-based diet.

□ Reduce Salt Intake

Although salt intake is essential for health, it is an excellent idea to minimize it during this period. Consuming too much salt can cause excessive water accumulation in the body.

If you eat many salty foods and don’t drink enough water, the body reportedly secretes an antidiuretic hormone that reduces urination frequency. Detoxification occurs as waste accumulated in the body is excreted when adequate water intake is achieved, but an imbalance between salt and water intake can turn into a poison.

If it’s hard to reduce sodium suddenly, you can balance it with potassium-rich foods. Bananas, potatoes, and pumpkins contain a lot of potassium.

□ Avoid Foods High in Sugar and Processed Foods

The liver and kidneys perform detoxification functions in our body. However, the detoxification function will inevitably decrease if these organs are damaged.

Consuming too much sugar or eating many processed foods can cause fatty liver, which ultimately weakens liver function.

It can also cause chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

Especially during a period when detoxification is needed, it’s better to avoid these foods and replace them with healthier options like fruits and vegetables.

□ Get Enough Sleep

Lack of sleep can impair bodily functions. It can cause stress and anxiety and induce high blood pressure and heart disease in severe cases.

Adequate sleep allows the body to remove accumulated toxins and recharge energy. Sleep is also essential for detoxification.

It’s good to get about 7 to 9 hours of sleep at night to recover a disrupted body rhythm.

Changing lifestyle habits, such as doing light exercise in the afternoon or reducing phone usage before bed, can help if it’s hard to fall asleep at night.
