A young man is gaining sympathy online after he revealed that his girlfriend dumped him due to his sudden extreme hair loss, the cause of which remains unknown.

On the 11th, a post titled “Review after losing all my hair in 3 months” was highlighted in online communities such as Epheme Korea, a hair loss-related internet cafe.

The author, a young man referred to as Mr. A, shared his heartbreaking story: “I’ve never even imagined hair loss, but suddenly all my hair fell out.”

Alopecia areata, the size of a coin(about 30mm), was discovered at the back of his head at the end of last December. At that time, he didn’t worry too much, went to a local dermatologist, and got a steroid shot.

His expectation that a single shot would resolve the issue was a misjudgment.

In January of this year, Mr. A noticed a larger patch of alopecia areata, even though he had already been treated with steroids for a month. Since the steroids didn’t work, he visited a local dermatologist who recommended him to a university hospital. At the hospital, Mr. A was prescribed immunosuppressants to treat the condition.

Another month later, at the end of February, he experienced the side effect of high blood pressure while on immunosuppressants. He had no choice but to switch to a more expensive immunosuppressant that did not have insurance coverage.

Despite starting treatment immediately, Mr. A’s hair loss progressed from alopecia areata to complete frontal hair loss.

During the height of his hair loss, he was shedding up to 300 strands of hair each day. After washing his hair, he would lose 200 strands and another 100 strands after waking up from sleep. Within just three months of the onset of hair loss, his head was completely bald.

As a result, he was also dumped by his girlfriend.

A disheartened Mr. A said, “I noticed a handful of pubic hair falling out, too. It seems I’m heading towards full-body hair loss.” He sighed, “My life plummeted in an instant.”

He despaired, saying, “They told me at the university hospital that it’s an autoimmune disorder where my immune cells in the scalp recognize the hair follicles and roots as external viruses and attack them, causing all the hair to break off.”

Netizens who heard his unfortunate story offered words of comfort, saying, “You’ll regain your hair,” “It will recover over time,” “You still have a handsome head,” and “The girlfriend who dumped you because of hair loss is the bad one.”
