Sensitive Skin SOS: Say Goodbye to Redness with These Tips

Daniel Kim Views

What can you do to improve sensitive skin?

Some people have sensitive skin that needs extra care. You may have skin that reddens easily or a barrier that breaks down quickly, which you may want to treat. While a dermatologist can treat these symptoms, it’s best to start by improving essential habits in your daily life. Let’s explore ways to improve your skin if you have sensitive skin.

Increase the number of make-up-free days.

Cover-up cosmetics contain iron oxides to match your skin color. They also contain UV blockers such as titanium dioxide and waterproofing agents like wax and silicone. These ingredients are bound to irritate the skin. Double cleansing to remove them can damage the skin barrier and clog pores, leading to skin problems. You may notice an improvement in your sensitive skin if you use make-up less often.

Increase the number of days without sunscreen.

There’s a belief that you should protect your skin with sunscreen even indoors. Today, most sunscreens are more like make-up, with most of their ingredients forming a physical barrier on the skin with most of its ingredients. Many sunscreens have iron oxide ingredients covering the skin, so they’re like base foundations, even though they’re labeled sunscreen.

These sunscreens can clog block pores and cause breakouts, so if you’re not going outside, it’s better to skip the sunscreen and moisturize. Even one day of this can have a positive effect on your skin.

Stop using skin toners

If your skin is sensitive and your skin barrier is damaged, it’s a good idea to stop using toners. There are more stimulating products, such as retinoids, but toner is the first thing to remove from your skincare routine. A toner is used to remove waste and acidify the skin. However, newer toners also have moisturizing properties that take away the role of the other moisturizing steps. It’s essential to remove factors that can irritate the skin, so if your skin is sensitive, you may want to skip the toner.
