How Your Morning Pick-Me-Up Affects Your Body Hour by Hour

How many minutes does it take for the awakening effects of coffee to appear? It takes only 10 minutes.

After the first sip of coffee, it metabolizes within 10 minutes. The digestive system quickly absorbs it into the bloodstream, and caffeine appears in the blood after 10 minutes.

Once caffeine is absorbed into the body, its awakening effects begin. These effects occur because caffeine inhibits the action of adenosine, which causes fatigue.

The adenosine inhibition effect continues even 20 minutes later. If adenosine receptors continue to be blocked, it can cause blood vessel constriction, increasing blood pressure.

The amount of caffeine in 1-2 cups of Americano is typically 200-250mg. This is known to raise systolic blood pressure by about 3-14mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 4-13mmHg.

After 45 minutes, the effect of caffeine on the body reaches its peak. The awakening impact is maximized, improving concentration and memory while increasing heart rate.

After more than an hour, it starts having a diuretic effect. Caffeine inhibits the production of anti-diuretic hormones, and if the kidneys can’t reabsorb water, urine volume increases. It also activates contractions in the colon and internal muscles, leading to an increase in stool volume. Two hours after consuming coffee, the awakening effects disappear. This can lead to feelings of fatigue, anxiety, and decreased concentration.

However, just because the awakening effect disappears doesn’t mean that caffeine is eliminated from the body. Caffeine can remain in the body for up to 12 hours.
