Animal vs. Plant-based Cream: Which Is Really Better for You?

daily Views

The popularity of cream-filled bread is steadily increasing. Did you know that the nutritional value of the cream inside the bread can vary depending on the ingredients used to make it? Let’s look at the types of cream we might not have known about.

The cream we commonly know: Animal-based cream

The cream we often encounter and commonly think of is the rich-tasting animal-based cream. Animal-based cream is made by physically extracting fat from milk and solidifying it. It contains saturated fats and cholesterol, which can raise blood cholesterol levels and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease if consumed excessively, thus harming vascular health.

What happens with excessive consumption?

While you might think that plant-based cream would be healthier for the reasons mentioned above, it’s not accurate to say that the cholesterol contained in animal-based cream necessarily has a negative impact on the body. A lack of cholesterol can also cause heart disease, and saturated fats in milk are not harmful if not consumed in large amounts. The key is to consume any food in moderation rather than excessively.

What is plant-based cream?

The main ingredient of plant-based cream is hydrogenated oil. The process of making hydrogenated oil produces harmful substances like trans fats, which are known to trigger vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia. Trans fats are not easily excreted once they enter the body, so it’s best to limit their intake as much as possible. Some emulsifiers and fragrances used in making plant-based cream may contain ingredients whose safety has not been verified, so it’s necessary to consume cream made with verified ingredients.

Is plant-based cream a fake cream?

Plant-based cream is an imitation cream made by adding additives to plant oils like palm and coconut. Processed cream and powdered cream are also part of imitation cream. Processed cream is made using fats like cream, but it’s made with sugar and other additives. Powdered cream is made by drying processed oil cream.

Controversy over emulsifiers in plant-based cream

The emulsifiers, stabilizers, and fragrances added when making plant-based creams are also controversial. Consuming too many emulsifiers can interfere with the absorption and excretion of active ingredients in the body. Stabilizers such as carrageenan and xanthan gum are used. Carrageenan has been embroiled in a cancer-causing substance controversy, and seaweed-like xanthan gum can cause allergies. Fragrances are also a bundle of chemical substances, with dozens to hundreds of substances included. Most of these substances are unverified for safety.

The difference between animal-based cream and plant-based cream

Animal-based cream and plant-based cream differ in taste and texture. Plant-based cream has the distinctive feature of not melting on the tongue and feeling like a film has been applied, while animal-based cream quickly melts in the mouth and is lighter and smoother. In terms of shape, the surface of a cake made with plant-based cream is softer, and the decorations are more intricate. Animal-based cream products should be purchased as fresh as possible, and since they separate the fat, they spoil quickly, so care must be taken.

Can taste distinguish it

Animal-based cream, made from milk, is far superior in taste. You can’t feel milk’s rich taste and flavor in plant-based cream. Since plant-based cream uses edible oil as the main ingredient, it has a stronger oily than rich taste.

Plant-based cream is better for baking

Many companies make cream bread mainly using plant-based or animal-based cream. Plant-based cream is less expensive than animal-based cream, doesn’t spoil easily, and maintains its shape for a long time.

The high-dependency, budget-friendly plant-based cream

Plant-based cream, which is cheaper and has a longer shelf life, is a budget-friendly option and has a high degree of dependency. You can buy twice as much plant-based cream at the same price as animal-based cream. Also, if you only use animal-based cream, the shape of the cake collapses quickly, so you have to mix some plant-based cream. This is why the demand for cream is increasing, but it doesn’t affect milk consumption.

Which has a longer shelf life?

The shelf life of plant-based cream is much longer than animal-based cream’s. Animal-based cream’s shelf life is about a week at most, but plant-based cream, which contains various additives, can be stored for up to five months, and if frozen, it can be stored even longer.
