Before You Buy Fashion Glasses, Read This! Potential Eye and Skin Risks

wikitree Views

More people wear fashion glasses, often opting for non-prescription lenses purely for style, regardless of their vision needs. However, it’s important to recognize that these fashion glasses can potentially negatively affect eyesight. Let’s explore the issues arising from wearing fashion glasses and discuss how to address them.

The Problem with Demo Lenses

Most fashion glasses come with demo lenses that look legit but are purely for show. These lenses are usually made from low-quality plastic that can blur your vision and even harm your eyesight over time. Not exactly what you signed up for, right? These lenses often lack UV protection, exposing your eyes to harmful ultraviolet rays. Prolonged exposure can damage your eyes and speed up the aging process.

What You Can Do

If you’ve purchased fashion glasses, you should visit an optical store to replace the lenses with ones that offer optical functionality. If the lens replacement cost is a concern, consider removing the lenses entirely and using the frames as a stylish accessory.

Beware of Allergic Reactions

Fashion glasses can also be made from materials that don’t exactly love your skin. Metals like cobalt and nickel are often used in frames and can trigger contact dermatitis (aka skin irritation). Some plastics, like butyl acrylate, cellulose acetate, and epoxy resin, can lead to allergic reactions. If you notice any irritation, ditch the glasses and see a dermatologist ASAP.

Fit Matters

Improper fit can also contribute to skin irritation. Too tight? They’ll leave pressure marks on your nose and ears, irritating your skin. Too loose? They’ll slide down and cause even more discomfort. Ill-fitting frames can also increase your chances of developing contact dermatitis, so be sure to find a pair that fits just right.
