There are certain things you should absolutely avoid for the sake of your anal health.

Dr. Philip Pearson, a colorectal surgeon specializing in colon cancer treatment in Pennsylvania, has revealed specific behaviors he never engages in to maintain anal health.

Dr. Pearson avoids using wet wipes and hemorrhoid creams and performs colon cleanses.

Dr. Pearson strongly advises against using wet wipes. These products often contain harsh disinfectants and preservatives that can trigger allergies or anal itching, especially if you have sensitive skin. Instead, he recommends using regular toilet paper after a bowel movement, followed by a gentle cleanse with warm water from a bidet or similar source.

Hemorrhoid ointments should also be avoided. Dr. Pearson calls them out for being greasy, ineffective, and overpriced. Hemorrhoids occur when blood pools in the veins around your anus, so improving circulation in that area is key. While popular hemorrhoid creams containing lidocaine might offer quick relief from pain and swelling, they don’t address the root cause.

Dr. Pearson also warns against unnecessary colon cleanses for constipation relief or weight loss. While you might temporarily see the number on the scale drop, that’s just water weight—not actual fat loss. Also, frequent colon cleanses can affect your gut’s natural rhythm and motility.
