Manchester United (from now on referred to as Man U) has secured their place in the final of the English Football Association (FA) Cup after a hard-fought match that extended to a penalty shootout.
On the 22nd (Korean time), Man U battled with Coventry in the 2023-2024 FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium in London. After a 120-minute match ended in a 3-3 draw, Man U emerged victorious in the penalty shootout, winning 4-2.
With this victory, Man U will face off against Manchester City (Man City) in the final match on the 25th at Wembley Stadium. This marks the second consecutive season where the FA Cup final is a Manchester Derby. Last season, Man U lost to Man City 2-1. In this final match, Man U is aiming to both avenge their previous loss and secure their 13th FA Cup win.
During the match, Man U experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, going from a 3-0 lead to a 3-3 tie. Due to a series of injuries among their center-backs, Man U deployed defensive midfielder Carlos Henrique Casimiro alongside Harry Maguire as a center-back.
Man U seemed to be cruising to an easy victory after goals by Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire, and Bruno Fernandes in the 23rd minute, 46th minute (extra time), and 13th minutes of the second half, respectively.
However, Coventry then began a fierce counterattack. Coventry managed to shift the momentum with back-to-back goals by Ellis Simms and Callum O’Hare at the 26th and 34th minute of the second half. Coventry even secured a penalty kick opportunity due to a handball foul by Man U defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka during extra time. Coventry’s Haji Wright spectacularly scored, completing a dramatic comeback with three goals in just over 20 minutes.
Coventry even seemed to have scored the winning goal by Victor Torp during extra time. Still, the goal was disallowed due to an offside call after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, missing out on what could have been a thrilling victory.
The match extended to extra time, but no further goals were scored, leading to a penalty shootout. Man U’s first kicker, Carlos Henrique Casimiro, missed his shot, causing some anxiety for the team. However, Coventry’s third and fourth kickers, Callum O’Hare and Ben Sheaf, also missed their shots, securing Man U’s place in the final.
