IOC Responds: No Samsung Phones for North Korean Athletes!

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued an official statement regarding the South Korean government’s concern that the North Korean delegation participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics received Samsung smartphones might violate United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions against North Korea.

On Thursday, the IOC released a brief statement saying, “We can confirm that the athletes of the NOC of DPRK have not received the Samsung phones.”

The IOC gave every athlete participating in the Paris Olympics a specially designed smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip 6, provided by Samsung, its official sponsor.

Although it was reported that the National Olympic Committee of North Korea received smartphones at the Samsung Olympic Experience Center within the athletes’ village, the IOC denied these claims after conducting a verification.

Earlier, South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lee Jae Woong stated during a regular briefing, “The UN Security Council prohibits the direct or indirect supply, sale, or transfer of all industrial machinery to North Korea under paragraph 7 of Resolution 2397(2017) and smartphones fall under this resolution as prohibited items.”
