Yonhap News

Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Dodgers has become the first player in Major League Baseball (MLB) history to achieve the remarkable feat of 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases.

Ohtani made history during a pivotal away game against the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park in Florida. Playing as the designated hitter, he led his team to a resounding victory, finishing the game with an incredible 6 hits in 6 at-bats, along with 10 RBIs and 4 runs scored by the ninth inning.

He started strong, hitting a double in his first at-bat and promptly stealing third base, marking his 50th stolen base of the season. In the second inning, he followed up with a hit to right field, which allowed him to secure his 51st stolen base.

Ohtani’s scoring began in the sixth inning with a two-run homer off Miami’s bullpen pitcher George Soriano. He continued in the seventh inning by hitting his season’s 50th home run against Mike Baumann.

But Ohtani wasn’t finished. In his final at-bat of the ninth inning, he launched his 51st home run against former position player Vidal Brujan, solidifying his unprecedented achievement of 51 home runs and 51 stolen bases.

Since his MLB debut in 2018, Ohtani has been recognized as a two-way player, pitching and batting.

This season, he focused solely on hitting due to the aftermath of elbow surgery, yet he successfully set a record that will be remembered in baseball history.

Ohtani’s 50-home run and 50-stolen base accomplishments are unprecedented in MLB, Japanese professional baseball, and the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO). This achievement ensures that Ohtani’s legacy will continue to be deeply etched in the annals of baseball history.
