An electric car is a vehicle that uses electricity as its main power source, and unlike internal combustion engines, it moves using an electric battery. Compared to conventional cars, they are quieter, have lower maintenance costs, and are environmentally friendly, which has recently increased demand.

However, like all cars, electric cars also have their own risks. Let’s learn about the safety guidelines and precautions for electric cars that would be helpful for electric car drivers or those considering purchasing one.

Things to be cautious about when charging electric cars

Electric cars charge their batteries with electricity instead of refueling with gasoline. The charging can be slow or fast, depending on the voltage. Fast charging allows for quick charging but also causes more heat, so it’s best to charge only up to 80%. And if the charger’s power is cut off, you should never forcibly turn the power back on, and you should not arbitrarily unplug the connector while charging.

Also, smoking near the charging station can cause a fire if a cigarette butt is blown away, so you must refrain from smoking. It may seem obvious since it uses electricity, but the risk of electric shock is very high. Therefore, you should never touch the connector or the area around the charging port with wet hands. Always ensure that the charging port and the connector are properly connected, and check for any damage to the cable or connector.

Accident response methods
How to deal with heavy rain

If a fire breaks out while charging, press the emergency power cut-off switch to cut off the current and report it immediately. Having a car fire extinguisher in emergencies is also a good idea. If you get into a traffic accident, be careful not to touch the wire part, open the window, and evacuate to a safe place as a priority. Don’t forget that when towing a vehicle, all four wheels must be in a fixed state.

Electric cars are designed to be waterproof during production and can reportedly drive in water up to about half the height of the tires. However, it is better to move and park the car to an above-ground parking lot in heavy rain to prepare for flooding. It is essential to drive slowly to prevent water from splashing on the underside. If the car is submerged, turn off the ignition immediately, evacuate, and report it.

Let’s get to know them well in advance
and use them safely

It is recommended always to leave at least 30km (about 18.6 miles) of drivable distance and charge the battery more than once a month for smooth battery performance. One behavior that negatively affects battery performance is leaving it discharged and always fully charging it when charging. Therefore, even if you do not use it for a long time, keeping the battery level at 30~90% is always good.

We have looked at the precautions to be aware of when using electric cars. While some may seem very obvious, they are not just precautions for using general electronic products but ways to use ‘electric cars’ well, so it would be good to pay more attention. Let’s remember these precautions to use the many benefits of electric cars more safely and effectively.
