Electric Car Alert: Tips to Prevent and Respond to Battery Fires

mobilitytv Views

Electric cars have become the trendsetters of the market
Always be prepared for battery fires
Let’s learn about prevention and response measures

Electric cars have quickly become a dominant force in the auto industry. One indispensable component of these electric vehicles is the battery. The battery is a highly important part that determines the overall value of an electric car. However, these electric car batteries have a fatal flaw – they are highly susceptible to damage.

When an electric car battery is damaged, repair costs are inevitable. The problem is that these repair costs can be astronomically high, often exceeding our expectations. If it only ended with repair costs, it would be a relief. In the worst-case scenario, battery damage can even lead to fires. Electric car battery fires have been a concern for some time. Hence, in this article, we’ll discuss how to prepare for and respond to fires caused by battery damage.

Even minor collisions necessitate
battery inspections

One way to prepare for electric car battery fires is to check your battery in the event of a collision. Driving exposes you to the risk of accidents at any time and place, and electric cars are no exception. The accidents referred to here range from serious ones to minor collisions. Even a minor crash should warrant a battery damage check if you are an electric car driver.

The reason is simple. Even a minor accident can cause damage to the battery. Once the battery is damaged, even slightly, it can lead to a short circuit. The problem is that it’s challenging for drivers to detect this damage with the naked eye. Getting your battery checked by a professional after an accident can significantly reduce the fire risk.

After driving through deep puddles,
inspect your vehicle before starting

The second way to prepare for electric car battery fires is to inspect your vehicle before starting if you’ve driven over a somewhat deep puddle. In most electric cars, the battery is located at the bottom of the vehicle, meaning water can splash onto the battery if you drive over a puddle.

If water splashes onto the battery or moisture remains and you start the car, a fire can occur due to a short circuit. The problem, again, is that it’s difficult for drivers to detect this with the naked eye. While driving in the rain might not pose a significant problem, if you’ve driven through a somewhat deep puddle, make sure to get your vehicle checked by a professional before restarting it.

In case of a fire,
immediately report to the fire department

The final point is how to respond to a fire. If a fire breaks out in an electric car, don’t try to put it out yourself – immediately report it to the fire department. Electric car fires have a low probability of being extinguished by conventional methods. While it would be fortunate if the fire could be extinguished, hasty actions by non-experts can potentially exacerbate the fire. Therefore, when a fire starts, leave the extinguisher to the firefighters.

It’s important to quickly and accurately share information about the vehicle’s condition, manufacturer, and model name with the firefighters. This is because different manufacturers and models of electric cars can have other locations for high-voltage wires and batteries.
