The United States is launching a trilateral summit body with Japan and the Philippines. Following the South Korea-US-Japan consultative body, a dominant analysis shows that pressure on China is expanding in Asia.

On the 18th (local time), the White House announced through a press release that “President Joe Biden of the United States will hold the first US-Japan-Philippines summit, including President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan, at the White House on the 11th of next month.”

The White House stated, “At the US-Japan-Philippines summit, the three countries will share their historical, economic, and democratic values” and “will advance the trilateral partnership based on a free and open Indo-Pacific common vision, among other things.”

At this meeting, the three leaders will also discuss inclusive economic growth and cooperation for new technology development, clean energy supply networks, climate change response cooperation, and peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region and the world.

President Biden will meet separately with President Marcos before the trilateral summit. They will discuss expanding cooperation on economic security, clean energy, human ties, human rights, and democracy.

According to the White House, at the US-Philippines summit, President Biden will reaffirm the iron-clad alliance between the two countries and emphasize America’s commitment to supporting international law and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The United States is observed to be expanding its checks on China by strengthening tripartite cooperation with these two countries. Furthermore, Japan and the Philippines are interpreted to be planning to respond to China’s aggressive actions in the East and South China Seas by further tightening security cooperation with the United States.

The launch of this trilateral summit body is due to the aligned interests of the three countries in checking China. Japan is experiencing conflict with China over maritime sovereignty issues in the East China Sea and the Philippines in the South China Sea.
