Iran vs. Israel: A Historic Showdown in the Middle East

Daniel Kim Views

On the 13th of last month (local time), Iran launched over 300 drones and missiles at Israel.

The attack was an act of retaliation by Iran, which blamed Israel for the airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Syria on the 1st of last month. The airstrike resulted in 13 deaths, including high-ranking officials of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, Iran and Israel have conflicted for decades, but this is the first time Iran has directly attacked mainland Israel.

Israel claimed victory, intercepting 99% of Iran’s projectiles with its Iron Dome defense system and the aid of the United States and other allied countries.

However, some analysis suggests that Iran’s operation was successful. Iran demonstrated its military capabilities to the world while avoiding responsibility for the escalation of hostilities by preemptively announcing the attack.

As Iran’s recent attack could spark a full-blown conflict in the Middle East, attention is being drawn to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has led Iran for decades. The Supreme Leader holds more power than the president and is the actual ruler of Iran, governing from above the government.

In this special report titled “The World Now,” we will examine the confrontation between Iran and Israel through Supreme Leader Khamenei and the possibility of the 5th Middle Eastern war escalating.

The 352nd episode of “The World Now” features announcer Yoon Su Young, Professor Kim Jae Cheon (Dean of Sogang University Graduate School of International Studies), Professor Park Hyun Do (Sogang University Euromena Research Center), and reporter Lee Jae Hwan (KBS International Bureau Chief). It will be broadcast live on KBS 1TV at 9:40 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.
