North Korea mocked Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the UN’s visit to South Korea and Japan, calling it a pathetic attempt to breathe life into the languishing sanctions against North Korea.

Kim Sun Kyung, Vice Minister of the International Organization Department at North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, stated on the 19th through the Korean Central News Agency that “they intend to keep raising the drumbeat of sanctions pressure, even if they have to patch together the worn-out sanctions drum.”

He kept criticizing, “I wonder how much of a resonance effect that will have, and what kind of ridicule and scorn they will receive from the international community as they go around beating their own drum.”

Vice Minister Kim also mentioned that the most urgent issue at the UN currently is the Middle East, arguing that the U.S. should focus on the Middle East, not Asia.

He said, “It’s very concerning that Thomas-Greenfield, who claims to represent the superpower at the UN, doesn’t seem to understand what the most pressing foreign issue for the U.S. is right now.”

“The U.S. doesn’t seem to care at all about peace and security in the Middle East, including Palestine. Instead, they appear to be quite flustered by the pathetic fate of the sanctions against North Korea. It would be better for them to find their place now,” he added.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield visited South Korea on the 14th for a three-night, four-day schedule and is expected to stay in Japan until the 20th.

The expert panel’s activities, which had been monitoring the implementation of UN sanctions against North Korea, will end this month.

In response, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield visited South Korea, emphasizing the importance of implementing sanctions against North Korea. She also revealed that she is considering constructing a new mechanism to replace the expert panel, even considering a method that excludes China and Russia.
