A verdict of imprisonment has been handed down to Meta’s spokesperson by the Russian authorities.

As reported by RIA News, on the 22nd (local time), the military court in Moscow, Russia, issued a six-year prison sentence to Meta’s spokesperson, Andy Stone, on charges of publicly defending terrorism.

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs initiated a criminal investigation against Stone towards the end of last year, withholding specific charges from public disclosure.

Allegedly, Stone authored online comments endorsing aggressive, hostile, and violent conduct towards Russian soldiers, referred to by Russia as participants in an extraordinary military operation in Ukraine, as per RIA News.

Stone maintains his innocence, and Meta has refrained from responding to inquiries seeking confirmation.

According to Interfax, the defendant’s legal counsel intends to appeal.

In Russia, Meta is classified as an extremist organization, resulting in the prohibition of social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
