During his state visit to Germany, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the necessity of a European joint defense system, arguing that reliance on the United States alone is not advisable.

According to Deutsche Welle in Germany on the 27th, Macron addressed approximately 15,000 spectators at the Frauenkirche Square in Dresden, stressing, “We must not fall into the trap of only looking at the United States.”

Macron received applause from the audience as he spoke in French and German. He stated that a new security structure is needed in Europe.

He particularly mentioned, “The true unification or integration of Europe is completed when we establish our framework for defense and security. We need to redefine this framework within a few months as Europeans.”

While he acknowledged the value of American support for Ukraine, he questioned whether it is reasonable to expect the United States to assume this role continually.

He criticized Russia, describing it as an “authoritarian regime that manipulates the future of Europe to fulfill imperial dreams reminiscent of the worst periods of the 20th century.” He further emphasized that peace should be secured through a treaty rather than by Ukraine’s surrender.

Macron also discussed the economic sector in which the U.S. and China vie for dominance, advocating for self-strengthening measures. He emphasized the importance of not being naive and the need for European regulations that enable the selection of preferred products.

On the 28th, the last day of his state visit, Macron will visit Münster to receive the Westphalian Peace Prize, awarded to individuals who have contributed to European integration. He is also scheduled to hold an expanded summit with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
