Biden-Harris Team Up in Philadelphia to Woo Black Voters as Polls Tighten

With just over five months remaining until the U.S. election, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris embark on a joint campaign trail. The two visited Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a battleground state, to rally the support of Black voters, whose approval rates have seen a decline. The Independent and other media outlets reported that it’s uncommon for the two to campaign together.

During their visit to Girard College, a boarding school in Philadelphia with a majority Black student body, President Biden emphasized, “Kamala and I are President and Vice President of the United States because of the votes of Black Americans.”

They introduced policies that would positively impact the Black community, such as capping insulin prices at $35 for seniors and preventing gun accidents. According to the media, the audience applauded when Vice President Harris mentioned a policy aimed at reducing student loan debt while introducing President Biden. Additionally, President Biden proudly highlighted his appointment of the first Black woman to the Supreme Court.

President Biden continued to criticize former President Trump during the rally. He pointed out, “When the COVID-19 pandemic hit during Donald Trump’s presidency, the Black community bore the brunt of the impact,” and “He took no responsibility.” Biden then declared, “With your votes in 2024, we will make Donald Trump face defeat again.”

Biden’s unusual campaign is interpreted as an effort to recover his declining approval ratings among the Black community. According to a survey by Bloomberg News and Morning Consult, as of this month, Biden’s approval rating among Black voters in seven battleground states, including Pennsylvania, has shrunk to 68%, a significant drop from 92% approval garnered during the 2020 election.
