Biden’s Bold Move: U.S. Weapons to Defend Ukrainian Border Cities

Ukraine is now expected to be able to attack Russian territory using weapons provided by the United States, a move that has previously been prohibited by the U.S.

On the 30th, media outlets, including AP News, cited government officials and reported, “President Biden has authorized Ukraine to retaliate against Russian territory using U.S. weapons, but only to defend its border cities, which are under heavy attack from Russia.”

Previously, the Biden administration had completely banned the use of U.S. weapons for attacks on Russian territory. According to media reports, this partial allowance signifies a “significant turning point in the (Russia-Ukraine) war.”

President Biden emphasized defense purposes as a condition for military support to Ukraine. However, the policy has changed as the border city of Kharkiv faces danger due to Russia’s recent large-scale attacks.

As a result, U.S. media outlets have theorized that Ukraine can now attack Russian bombers that are launching bombs toward Ukrainian territory from near the border.

However, Ukraine is still prohibited from using these weapons to attack Russia’s civilian infrastructure or use long-range missiles to attack military targets deep within Russian territory. John Kirby, the White House National Security Communications Coordinator, stated, “Our support for Ukraine has appropriately evolved as the conditions on the battlefield have changed.”
