The Israeli military has declared intentions to cease military operations in certain areas of southern Gaza to facilitate the distribution of relief supplies and other humanitarian aid.

As reported by the BBC, Reuters, and other sources on the 16th, the Israeli military announced that it would “halt tactical military activities” from 8 AM to 7 PM daily, for humanitarian purposes.

Military operations have been suspended in certain areas including the main road connecting the Kerem Shalom checkpoint, situated in the southern border of Israel, to Gaza.

The Israeli military explained on this day that military operations in the area were suspended until further notice, stating that it was a measure in “accordance with the additional discussions with the UN and other international organizations.”

However, the Israeli military conveyed via X (formerly Twitter) that ground operations will continue in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

On the 15th, reports from local outlets, including Times of Israel, revealed that eight Israeli soldiers were killed in an explosion while operating in Rafah. Lieutenant Waseem Mahmoud was among the casualties. He was a platoon leader of the combat engineering unit under the 401st Armored Brigade of the Israeli military who was killed while traveling in an armored vehicle and attacked by the enemy.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video message, “We have paid a heartbreaking price in the war to defend our homeland,” and “Despite the costly price, we must pursue our war goals.”
