On the 16th, Yonhap News cited the Nihon Keizai Shimbun and reported that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on the 15th that he is considering imposing sanctions on third-party organizations in countries like China that provide Russia with military-use materials.

This is the first time the Japanese government has considered imposing sanctions on Chinese domestic companies concerning the war in Ukraine.

Following the G7 summit held in Italy, Kishida told reporters, “Japan is considering new sanctions, including measures against organizations in third countries like China.”

He added, “This is expected to enhance the effectiveness of sanctions against Russia.”

In a joint statement issued after the summit, the G7 stated, “China’s continued support for Russia’s defense industry base is enabling Russia to maintain its illegal war in Ukraine,” adding “We urge China to stop the transfer of dual-use items, including weapons parts and equipment, to the Russian defense sector.”

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK recently reported that there is an ongoing discussion about a plan to prohibit exports from Japan to organizations suspected of involvement in providing military-use materials to Russia.
