Crisis in Crimea: U.S. Missile Blamed for Deadly Beach Explosion

On Sunday, Russia condemned Washington for the latest Ukrainian attack on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula, claiming that U.S.-supplied missiles were used in the strike.

According to AFP on the 23rd (local time), the Russian Defense Ministry said that Ukraine struck civilian facilities in Sevastopol using the U.S.-delivered Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles which are equipped with cluster warheads. The missile fragments fell near a beach on the north side of the city of Sevastopol where locals were on holiday.

The attack left five dead, including three children, and injured more than a hundred.

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated, “The United States and Kyiv are responsible for this deliberate missile attack on peaceful citizens.”

Sevastopol is a city in the Crimean peninsula which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

According to the defense ministry, Ukraine fired four ATACMS missiles, of which three were shot down and one detonated midair.

The defense ministry in Moscow said U.S. specialists had set the ATACMS missiles’ flight coordinates based on information from U.S. spy satellites, stressing once again that Washington was directly responsible for the attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been urging supporter countries to help Ukraine step up attacks on Russian soil.

He wrote on X, “With recent approval for attacks on Russian territory near the border, we have been able to destroy some of Russia’s terror potential.”

He added, “We need more long-range weapons for Ukrainians.”
