49% of U.S. Car Dealers Aren’t Excited About Selling EVs—Here’s Why

A survey of 250 car dealers across the United States revealed that the majority of dealers have little enthusiasm for selling electric vehicles (EVs).

CDK Global, a company specializing in automotive retail software and data, conducted the survey and highlighted that “a surprisingly large number of U.S. auto dealers say their Sales staff aren’t enthusiastic about selling EVs.”

According to the survey, 49% of respondents said they have no expectations for selling electric vehicles. Even in California, where EVs are popular, very few expressed excitement about them.

Dealers in mountainous regions, where charging infrastructure (public or otherwise) is much more limited than in coastal or major urban areas, showed the lowest enthusiasm for EVs. Also, the level of training that dealers received about EVs directly impacted their enthusiasm.

This indicates that dealers’ lack of interest and insufficient training are factors hindering the growth of the EV market. The report suggests that improving dealer education and expanding charging infrastructure are necessary to boost EV sales.
